RMYC Mylne class visit to Strangford Lough Yacht Club
3rd & 4th September 2011
(A somewhat delayed but very worthwhile recollection of a great weekend)
(CLICK here to view super photos)
After last years racing against Glen class members from SLYC on the
Mersey celebrating the 75 years of the RMYC Mylne class, the Mylne
class were sent an invitation from SLYC Glen class to sail & race on
the
beautiful waters of Strangford Lough near Belfast.
The team of Ian, Carys, Marcia, Alex, Heather Peter G, Graham, Roy,
Sarah, Peter S and supported by Lesley were met on the Friday
evening at Belfast airport by SLYC members who then transported us
to our B&Bs & members houses were it was a quick wash and brush
up and then to a welcome reception and meet the members of SLYC
on the at the light ship club house of their neighbours, Down Cruising
Club. Saturday 10 am we all met at SLYC and with a gentle breeze
and the moored boats glinting in the sun opposite the club house at
Whiterock. Instructions for the day were given and the course was set
and each member of the RMYC were allocated to a boat crewed by
SLYC members and Lesley who was now promoted to "official team
photographer"
took up her position on the motor launch "Holly Blue".
As the start of the first race was imminent, it was apparent that that
SLYC were not to give RMYC any chances and it became a very
congested start with penalties on both sides needing to be taken. After
the windward mark the fleet then set sail down the Lough with
spinnakers set and the sight was fantastic as we raced very
competitively between the Islands The race finished with Ian crossing
the line in first place with Peter S. in second, both being declared the
winner
due to a misreading of the course!
It was then all moored up alongside Holly Blue & a picnic lunch was
followed by a race back to Whiterock. Once again with spinnakers set,
the race took place in very testing conditions in light wind and the
course took us through many Islands and moored boats, which added to
the fun! The race positions changed through out & the eventual winner
was
Carys who was sailing on the winning Glen.
That evening in the comfort of SLYC the two clubs had a wonderful
evening of food, wine and conversation of the day's events & the
differences between the two classes and clubs. The following day was
another beautiful late summer's morning & sunglasses were to be seen
upon members of both clubs (and not just for the sun!!!) The day
involved team racing consisting of 4 Glens per side and one Rivers class
as side, we were to have two races, swapping boats after the first race.
Once again, the competition was fierce between the two clubs & the
positions changed throughout the races. Even with Roy's valiant efforts
near the end of the second race, RMYC ended the day in second place
overall!! Over a very pleasant lunch & a generous prize giving and
mementoes of the weekend it was discussed that the two clubs
should continue' the competition and that it should if possible become an
annual event. If this is to continue the RMYC need to practice in the bar
and on the water to become more competitive with our new friends from
Strangford Lough. I am sure all of us who travelled to Belfast would like
to thank Ian for organizing the RMYC team and Henry and the entire SLYC
members
for there hospitality and allowing us to sail in there
lovely boats.

RMYC General Meeting October 13th 2011
The Commodore Mr Phil Gilmour gave a comprehensive report on the
Club's many social activities since the AGM in March and on the very
challenging but successful 2011 sailing season. He reviewed the various
regatta and other races during the year with particular mention of the
success once again of the Admiral's Cup race in conjunction with the
Liverpool YC and Tranmere Alliance members. He expressed his
appreciation for the stoicism of the members who manned the line at
Beaumaris for the annual RMYC regatta in August, on a day of strong
winds and relentless rain. He also acknowledged the disappointment
felt by all members at a season which was frequently disrupted by
unsuitable weather conditions leading to the necessary cancellation of
racing.
The Commodore acknowledged the success of the very enjoyable visit
made by RMYC members to the Strangford Lough YC at their kind
invitation, a reciprocal occasion to that held at RMYC in 2010.
The Commodore thanked the numerous Club members for their efforts
on behalf of the Club, in particular the Vice and Rear Commodores, the
Captain, the Hon. Secretary and Mr Cliff Renshaw for his continuing work
on the Rock Ferry and Club re-development plans.
Following the resignation, after many years service, of Mr John
Baragwanath as Cup-Bearer, the Commodore expressed his and the
members' appreciation for his exceptional efforts in upholding the high
traditions of this historic office. The members gave loud and enthusiastic
approbation in support of the Commodore's words.
The Captain, Mr Mike Blaylock, was re-elected for the ensuing year. The two
Assistant Captains, Mr Graham Knight and Mr Alistair Smith, having been
appointed by the General Committee will continue in office. The Captain
thanked his two assistants and the many members who had assisted him with
the various tasks essential to a successful sailing season.

RMYC Junior Member Will Taylor Wins
the 'Tera' Dinghy World Championship in Denmark
Click Picture to goto RSTera Website
RMYC junior member Will Taylor - age 14 - has recently returned from
the RS Tera Dinghy World Championships in Aabrenaa, Denmark where
he won the Pro Fleet. The UK Coach, Jonathon Lewis, said "In the Pros,
Will Taylor gave a master class to the fleet on how to sail a boat quickly.
He dominated the fleet with out-standing pace and consistency. With one
race being won by 2 mins 45 secs, the fleet watched on in awe as, even
with a couple of bad starts, he powered through them. Winning with a day
( two races ) to spare, he became GBR's first World Champion of the week."

Will completed all 11 races with results in the top 3 making him the champion
by 17 points after the hard chasing Italians faltered in the final stages of the
regatta.
dinghy for three years and is a member of the Class National Squad. He is
occasionally to be found sailing with his grandfather, RMYC Member Chris
Kay, in Meridian on the

The 2011 RMYC Regatta at Beaumaris
After strong winds had necessitated the cancellation of the West Kirby Regatta
on Wednesday the portents for the RMYC Regatta the next day were not good.
An undesirable forecast of up to SW force 6 in the morning, with the prospect of
a moderation around midday saw a wet, misty, windy morning dawn over the
Menai Strait. The Rough conditions out on the moorings, with WSW winds at
20 knots meant that even at 1000 conditions were not looking very promising.

The Commodore, after consulting experienced Menai sailors, and despite many
sailors having their doubts, hoisted the one hour postponement signal. The sailors
scepticism
adding to the unattractive prospect of racing. But the Commodore's decision was
vindicated and at 1155 the first of the 13 Class sequences started. A well
waterproofed but dripping line team stuck it out with all the Classes present getting
away as planned.

Of necessity the course for everyone was kept to a visible, just, distance from the
line. The challenging conditions were met with equal stoicism by a large proportion
of the yacht crews that were entered and good racing was had by all, even though
it was necessary to shorten to 3 and 2 laps for different Classes.

The Commodore expressed his thanks to all the safety boat crews, the line team
and also to Royal Anglesey Yacht Club for their the usual warm hospitality.

International Etchells Northern Championship 2011

Over the weekend 23-24th July the Etchells Northern Championships hosted
by
with slightly calmer winds on the Sunday. Last year’s runner up, Pointless,
skippered
by Ray Huntington, made a clean sweep this year, winning all 4 races.

Saturday
Race 1 saw a long northerly beat down river and into the choppy waters of
wind-over-tide. This was followed by an energetic reach back up the river,
where boat positions constantly changed with all boats in close proximity,
but eventually finishing Pointless, Disco, and Invader.
Race 2 a slight swing in wind direction resulted in a course change, creating
a running start to maximum use of the river’s width to create a long windward
second leg. A downwind start led to all the fleet reaching the leeward mark
together, but it was Pointless who emerged from the battle first and chased
closely
by Disco and Faldetta.

Sunday
Race 3 In slightly calmer winds, the race began on another running start; all
boats hoisted their spinnakers as soon as they crossed the start line, which
meant they all arrived tightly packed together at the first mark before
Pointless once again took the lead, with Atlantis Gold coming out second. Up
the beat the fleet split direction but the close positioning maintained throughout
the race, with all finishing within a couple of minutes of each other; Pointless
maintained her lead with Disco second and Invader third.
Race 4 saw Invader take the early lead but a broken tiller extension caused a
near broche at the second mark, allowing Disco to take the lead. However,
this was short lived as again Pointless pulled out into the lead and although
there was a tacking duel up the last beat between Pointless and Disco,
Pointless still came out on top, finishing just a couple of boat lengths at most
ahead.
Both boats were closely followed by Faldetta, Invader and Atlantas Gold.
Overall
Results:
1 Pointless - 2 Disco Volante - 3 Faldetta - 4 Invader - 5 Atlantas Gold

North West Inter Club Keelboat Event in Etchells
at Royal Mersey Yacht Club - Saturday, 16th July
A number of the regions top dinghy racing clubs were
invited to race
against each other in International Etchells on the Mersey off Rock
Ferry and sponsored by Royal Mersey Yacht Club. Each Club provided
two helms sharing the duties over two races with Royal Mersey pilots
assisting
with spinnaker handling in the very difficult conditions.
In the first race a close duel between Tom Ditchburn/Tom Hubbard of
Budworth SC (1034) and Dave Bower/Glyn Sheffield of West Lancs YC
(804) saw the Budworth team come out in front and lead for the whole
race.
Poor visibility, fluctuating winds and the departure of a super tanker
forced race officer Paul Flower to set an inshore course for the second
race. The first four boats were clear ahead at the top mark but Budworth
went offshore for wind and tide leaving West Lancs, Trevor Tansey/Simon
Shepherd of Royal Mersey YC (894) and Ian McLean and Vince McGrath of
Dee SC (803) in a luffing match on the shorter inshore route. At the bottom
mark Budworth were third but a tacking duel with West Lancs up the
second beat took them to the front. On the second and third matches there
were close matches between Dee and John Collingwood/Graham Ellis in the
second
Royal Mersey boat (463).
Tom Ditchburn and Tom Hubbard of Budworth Sailing Club were worthy
winners and received the trophy from Commodore Phil Gilmour with West
Lancs
Yacht Club in second place.

RMYC AT DUN LAOGHAIRE 2011 REGATTA
IRISH SEA CUP CHALLENGE
The Irish Sailing Association invited Clubs from Wales to a join them in a
bi-annual inter club competition as part of the Dun Laoghaire Regatta, the
invitation was subsequently extended to Liverpool YC and Royal Mersey YC.
The Regatta hosted 420 boats with around 3000 sailors all invited to one
big party at the four clubs on the waterfront.
Our racing was held in J80’s with competition from Lough Derg YC and Lough
Swilly YC. The Irish challengers were well experienced national competition
standard sailors.

Off Dun Laoghaire - preparing to race
The RMYC team comprised Trevor Tansey on the main and principal spinnaker
flyer, Simon Shepherd the front man and spinnaker rope un-tangler, James
Wright fulltime commentator, our muscle man on the jenny and Graham Ellis
the fearless skipper with hat to match. Eleanor Tansey provided essential on
shore support.
RMYC Vice-Commodore Trevor Tansey at the Helm
The competition was held over four days in mid July in winds starting on the first
day peaking 33 knots. Needless to say the spinnaker was soon relegated to the
hold while we quickly found our way around the boat in large waves. James
likened it to throwing one self out of a first floor window then climbing the stairs
to do it again and again. James collected a large bruise with a harken imprint .
The following three days were a complete contrast with winds hardly getting
above force 2. However this gave us time to master the spinnaker ropes.
The racing was very close with all four boats crossing the finish line with in a few
minutes. The positions were closely contested and nail biting to the last seconds
of each race. To give an example we picked up a joint 1st and a joint 3rd when
the race officer couldn’t separate us. Two races were abandoned due to
changing wind directions, both when we were leading the fleet. But after all that
we finished last of the four. The Irish retained their trophy.

A long starting line!
The Regatta organisation deserves a very well done as all race organisation was
of a championship standard; so efficient that our family back in the UK received
our race results on Facebook before we arrived back at the marina.
The radio on board was a must, a source of entertainment, an insight into the
detailed marker buoy positioning by GPS and very helpful information on wind
directions, which became known as wind sniff reports.
Studied concentration - with plenty of yachts astern
The RMYC team would like to thank the Irish for hosting such and event, and look
forward to the next one in 2013.

17th July 2011
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Royal Mersey Yacht Club selected a team to compete in the 80th anniversary
year of the Round the Island Race. The nine person team picked up their Sunsail
F40 Beneteau yacht GBR4002N from Port Solent on Thursday, sailing to Cowes on
Friday; it proved an interesting start to the weekend with 15Kt winds and rain in
the Solent, testing the equipment out made the crew at home with the boat, with
good use put to the depth sounder! The F40 headed for Cowes for an overnight
berth at the Yacht Haven topped of with a drink and a Chilli.
The Saturday Race was started at 0620 hrs on Saturday 25th June; necessitating
an alarm call at 04:15 which saw the crew ready to sail by 05:00. Heavy winds and
poor visibility greeted the yachts as they left their berths jousting for position for
the start was hectic, with hundreds of yachts there for the 3rd flights start, out of
a total of 1900 plus entries. We started with force 6 on the beat to Thorness Bay
with good time being made using the tide. We were a little far out to use the tide to
full advantage, but the sailing was good. As GBR 4002 approached Sconce Point the
wind reached 26Kt which made port starboard
for all, with several collisions being reported, a taste of things to come.
As the Needles approached gusting and the start of a large rolling sea made choosing
a safe course around the light and rocks more important than position, 4002 was
double main reefed at this time although the lead boats in the F40 class carried no
reefs. As the Needles were rounded the reported 20ft seas came into their own with
many boats carrying Spinnakers broaching as the surfed down the wave faces, our
spinnaker safely below decks, where it stayed; finishing in a strange boat was more
important than winning at this time.
There were 60 plus May Day and Pan Pan calls that day, ranging from capsized yachts,
man over board and injured crew. Masts were lost and one of the F40 even lost its
steering wheel and resorted to standby tiller use as it motored back to Cowes, in the
results listing a very high proportion of boats retired in and around the Needles area
that morning; 300 yachts retired in all.
The run down to St Catharine’s point saw the RMYC team clipped on the yacht as
the various helms kept us clear of the very compacted fleets around us, with yachts
assing us to be found later going about seeking shelter. Lunch was a very hurried
snack with much tea and coffee spilt over the deck, but revitalised 4002 carried on
to Bembridge Buoy and a turn back on to a beat and calmer seas, with a wind of
28Kts with gusts well over 34kts. 4002 carried us on with no problems as Osborne
House appeared out of the mist along with several other F40’s all with no reefs
and very happy looking crews as the Finish was in sight.
The Yachts divided into their finishing sectors designated to them with us to the south
of the line where an end of race duel happened between us and another F40 for
position on the line, much tacking followed with us finishing behind them by 7sec close
end of race fun.
There was no hanging around to see others finish or have a “jolly” in the sun which
now had decided to appear to become a beautiful sunny afternoon for the hundreds
still to finish, still with heavy gusty wind making a good beat to the line, into the Yacht
Haven and time for a bear or two while Sunsail completed the results for our class,
22 out of 42 not bad for two hours practice the day before; next year in a force 3
and total sunshine will be even better.
Our time was 50KM in 8hrs 22min only 60mins behind the class winner! But all our crew
was safe and no damage to the Yacht.
an early night followed, Sunday dawned ready for the sail back to Port Solent and the
return of 4002, had the storm passed by, yes to be replaced with Fog of 150 yards
visibility, great sailing weather!
The sail back to Port Solent was a good team builder, with many skills brushed up; as
we entered Portsmouth the Sun broke through the Clouds for the hour long motoring
back to the berths, coffee a bun and fond farewells, till next year. When the sun will
shine
and the wind will not be above Force 4, any takers?

After an absence of many years, the Etchells class has once
again started racing regularly on the Clyde.
Joining fleets on the Solent and the Mersey, the British
Association is delighted to see the class racing in Scotland
again. Going back as far as 1981, the Etchells had a European
Championships on the Clyde, and this rebirth bodes well for
the whole European scene. The Etchells is a strict one design
keelboat that delivers affordable, high quality racing yet can
be sailed by crews of three of four and, as they are on the
Clyde, can be sailed off a mooring where appropriate.
In the last 6 months 4 additional boats have migrated to the
Clyde, bringing fleet numbers up to 6 with 4 more owners
currently looking to purchase boats, and the local fleet has
adapted it's strategy by limiting allowable hull numbers to those
below 1200. (The newest boats in the class are approaching 1400)
This has bought a raft of good second hand boats into the area at
very reasonable costs (and Etchells last a long time, the boat 3rd
overall in the 2010 World Championship was hull number 924 from
Australia.) There is interest from other sailors in the area who are
now looking to join this new fleet, which will be primarily moored
at Royal Gourock Yacht Club who run a launch service to the boats,
as well as offering excellent Yacht Club facilities. The Etchells British
Class Association is looking forward to welcoming the Clyde fleet at
future National events and investigating the possibility of holding
the British Championships in Scotland sooner rather than later.

RMYC welcomes the Holyhead SC for Team Racing
On
SC Team Racing members to Rock Ferry on a blustery day with an uncertain
forecast.
With the wind just north of west and gusting up to nearly 30 knots racing was
in the balance. However, after a slight delay eight Etchells and two Mylnes
shaped up for an inshore start. It proved to be very exciting sailing on a big flood
tide, where unfortunately two Etchells suffered rigging damage, hopefully without
causing any collateral damage.

Royal Mersey Mylne Class 75th Anniversary
Over the weekend of 10th - 11th July 2010 the Royal Mersey Mylne
Class fleet celebrated its 75th Anniversary.
On the Saturday the fleet of Mylnes raced with guest helms from other nearby
Clubs and from amongst friends of Mylne owners. It was a very enjoyable days
racing with two races being held. But with a strong spring tide running, strangers
to the Mersey found the tide quite a challenge. The first race was won by 'Mercian'
and the second by 'Merk'.
In the evening there was a celebratory dinner attended by many guests including
the grandaughter of Alfred Mylne II, Mrs Susan Ritchie, who very kindly presented
the Club with a framed Mersey Mylne building plans print. Commodore, David Massey,
paid tribute to the Royal Mersey Mylne owners over the years who had ensured that
the Class continues to thrive 75 years from its commencement. He also conveyed the
Members thanks to Class Secretary, ian Diamond, for all his organisation of Mylne
events during this anniversary year.
The prizes were graciously presented by Mrs Muriel Colley.
On Sunday due to very strong westerly winds it was not possiblfor the Mylnes to race,
but the Etchells managed a shortened course race in very challenging conditions.
The new Mersey Mylne Anniversary Bowl was won by Andrew Whittingham-Jones
and his crew on Roc.
Throughout the weekend the RMYC were delighted to have a photographer representative
from 'Classic Boat' magazine present for all the proceedings. It is anticipated that an
article about the Royal Mersey Mylnes will appear in the magazine later in the year.
The 'Mersey Royals'
On Saturday 19th June a team of RMYC members and friends participated in the
'2010 Round the Island Race'. Skippered by Peter Ball, the crew included RMYC
members Geoff Sheen, Ray Huntington, Roy Brennan and Nigel Anderton.

Well done the 'Mersey Royals'!
RMYC welcomes the 'Glen Class' Fleet Team
On Saturday 5th June the Royal Mersey Yacht Club welcomed the 'Glen Class' Fleet Team
from the Strangford Lough Yacht Club to a Team Racing weekend.
Saturday started very unpromisingly with no wind a dull sky and the river like a millpond
which, with Mersey tides, can make life very difficult if not impossible. However, the Race
Officer went off to the Committee Boat and everyone went off to the moorings, somewhat
dubiously with the prospect of being towed up tide of the start line. After a postponement
of about half an hour with a breeze picking up all the boats made it off the moorings and
were ready to race.
The course, of about 7 miles, was set from the start off Rock Ferry, to Egg buoy off Wallasey,
and back to Rock Ferry. Gradually from a dull sky and no wind there came a good stiff
N'ly breeze and bright sunshine. The fleet of 8 Mersey Mylnes and 2 Etchells tacked their
way North against a N'ly breeze, running down with last of the ebb, round Egg buoy on the
start of the flood tide and with spinnakers flying ran back for Rock Ferry. There was much
changing of places during a very tactical race as boats sought more tide and wind in different
areas of the river. The race ended with a very close finish with 4 Mylnes vying for first place,
but Mercator just made it with Glen Class SLYC member Luke Hamill at the helm. The next
4 Mylnes were not far astern either.
So, all in all, a fanatstic days racing was had by all on the River Mersey, followed by a most
enjoyable dinner in the evening. The RMYC Commodore, Dave Massey, was delighted to receive
on behalf of the Club a framed presentation SLYC Burgee commemorating their visit.

On the second day, Sunday 6th June it was time for Team Racing. In contrast to the previous
days glorious sunshine the day was dull, and damp at times, but with a NW'ly breeze about force
2 increasing nicely to force 3, all was well set for racing. Eight Mylnes in two teams of 4
participated in two races, the teams changing boats after race one.
The first race was from the committee boat, North to Rock Ferry buoy and then to Bromborough
buoy before returning to the line. A good close start with one Mylne pulling away and leading all
the way to an alternative shortened course finish after one and a half laps, with the rest of the
fleet finishing close together some two or three minutes astern of the first Mylne. The team point
scores were level at the end of race one .
The second race was another good close start heading south east to Dingle buoy, and then round
Bromborough buoy, through the line, over two laps. This time the fleet were well spread out with
Corrin from SLYC leading again to a finish, which saw the SLYC Glen class team winning the most
points.
The overall result then was of course a win for the SLYC Glen Class team, who are to be warmly
congratulated on their success on the River Mersey.
After prize giving, with the presentation of a glass trophy to SLYC, a buffet concluded events before
our extremely friendly and successful guests from SLYC set off back to Northern Ireland.
Everyone at RMYC is looking forward to meeting up with the Commodore, Officers and Glen Class
members of SLYC again, hopefully in the not too distant future.
A brilliant weekend, organised primarily by Ian Diamond, who was warmly thanked for all his efforts.

The Etchells Northern Championship 2010
Saturday 22nd May - Sunday 23rd May
The event was held over two days of glorious sunshine with the Mersey looking superbly clean
& blue with harbour dolphins to keep us company. The first day had the Race Officers thinking
hard about where to send the fleet as there was only a breeze of 3 to 5 mph and a heavy tide
running. Due to their commendable perseverance two races were run giving a result for that
day. Day two was also bright and sunny, the wind however could not have been more different
with a good stiff breeze arriving as main’s were hoisted on the moorings. Three races were
held on day two all of which were keenly contested with a lot of close action at the newly
repositioned Rock Ferry buoy, there is not a lot of room now between it and the old Tanker
Cleaning Berth with heavy wind shadow. As you can see first and second place were very Boar
close with Impulse eventually victorious, winning both the Victoria Cup & the Reliance Trophy.
The Admiral's Cup

It is a considerable number of years, possibly as many or even more than twelve years, since
the last holding of the Tranmere Sailing Club (now Liverpool Y.C. & Tranmere S.C. Alliance)
and Royal Mersey Yacht Club Admiral's Cup race but, on Sunday 16th April, it was very
successfully resurrected.
With a 9 metre tide and WNW force 4 winds it proved to be a a challenging day for racing on
the River Mersey. Twenty two yachts of several classes lined up for the start and there ensued
couple of hours of enjoyable but highly competitive sailing. A well chosen course by the
LYC/STA Race Officer set some challenging legs with plenty of short tacking going North.
On handicap the eventual winner was Etchells 'Disco Volante' from Royal Mersey, and with
a very close overall points score between the two clubs Royal Mersey were the winners of
the Admiral's Cup. for Results CLICK HERE
A brief but convivial after sailing 'get together' was held at Royal Mersey for members from
both clubs and the Cup was duly presented. Royal Mersey Commodore David Massey thanked
the LYC/LTSC Officers and members and expressed the hope that the Admiral's Cup race
would once again become an annual event.
[The apparent origin of the Admiral's Cup was due to a fondness of member's for the nearby
Pub 'The Admiral', now closed ]

King
Harald V of Norway
King Harald of Norway is a passionate yachtsman. In earlier years His Majesty represented Norway sailing in the Norwegian Olympic team three times.
He has won gold, silver and bronze in the European Championships. In 2008 his yacht “Sira”, which was built for his father King Olav V, celebrated
first place
in the 8 metre class in the World Championship of traditional sailing.
He is a President of Honour of the International Sailing Federation.
His father King Olav V, a keen sailor, was in the winning crew of the 8 metre class Olympic gold medal team sailing the yacht “Norna” in the
Amsterdam
Olympics of 1928.
THE
ROYAL MERSEY YACHT CLUB
The Royal Mersey Yacht Club was founded by Royal Charter in 1844. The Prime Minister of 1844, Sir Robert Peel, was one of the founder
members as was His Grace The Marquis of Anglesey. The first Patron was Her Majesty Queen Victoria and each reigning monarch continued
the patronage until 1952 when patronage was passed on to His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness visited the Club
in May 2008.
The Club has been active as the premier yacht club of Liverpool and the Wirral (collectively known as Merseyside) throughout its history. The
Club enjoys excellent sheltered waters on the Wirral side of the Mersey where its vessels are kept on swinging moorings through the racing
season.
A long slipway allows full access to the water no matter what the state
of the tide – and the Mersey can draw a 10.8 metre tide!
The Club sails only keelboats and cruisers; the waters of the Mersey do not allow smaller vessels to be sailed easily in safety. There are
three racing fleets which are active on the Mersey Estuary during the racing season; namely the Royal Mersey Mylnes; International Etchells
and National
Squibs. Some fifty cruising vessels
are owned by members and many sail wearing the Blue Ensign of the Royal Fleet.
In 2009, the
Royal Mersey Yacht Club hosted both the Northern and the European Championships
for International Etchells class.
The Club is currently leading development projects together with Wirral Borough Council and other agencies for the redevelopment of the
waterfront area at Rock Ferry.

MERLE' is on the Mend
Following the unfortunate damage to Mesey Mylne 'Merle' when her moorings broke
last year it is good to be able to report that 'Merle' is on the mend.
In a small, out of the way boat builders in Bethel, near Bangor, North Wales, unknown
even to many yachtsmen in North Wales and the North West of England are a group
of woodworking craftsmen working away on a variety of boats. Situated amongst fields
some considerable distance from the nearest sailing waters, 'Merle' sits on her trailer
surrounded by beautiful new-build, alteration and repair work on a variety of wooden
boats. 'Merle' is nearly ready to return to the Mersey having been hull-repaired, mast-
repaired and re-painted. The standard of workmanship is awe inspiring, to see such
traditional skills still being practised in 2010 is hugely encouraging, they are to be
congratulated on what they achieve.
In this the 75th Anniversary year of the Royal Mersey Mylne Class it is gratifying
to know that 'Merle' will soon be back amongst her peers on the River Mersey.

RMYC becomes Recognised Training Centre
for RYA Shorebased Training

In late 2008 the Commodore set the goal to develop RMYC as an RYA Recognised Training
Centre with the objective of providing training for the benefit of RMYC members and also
promoting the Club to potential new members.
A questionnaire was sent out to establish the demand for training within the club. The
responses received indicated that there was a significant demand for courses such as VHF,
First Aid, Performance Sailing and Intermediate and Advanced Racing. There was also
support for others such as basic sailing courses and Day Skipper.
In October, the first step to achieving the goal was realised when RMYC received its
certificate as a Recognised Training Centre for shorebased courses.
Mike Blaylock has volunteered to be the Principal of the Training Centre, responsible for
ensuring that RYA standards are maintained. Other members of the training sub-committee
are John Collingwood, who is acting as contact with the RYA, and Max Cooke.
Further details of the training on offer in the coming months can be found on the new
training page of the RMYC website.
RMYC Looking to the Future
For some months RMYC General Committee members have been studying the potential for
improvements to the environment of the area surrounding the Club where a degree of
gradual neglect has for some time caused members to have concern for the future activities of the Club. As part of this exercise a sub-committee has studied the areas of land in the vicinity of the Club and the potential for enhancing the sailing opportunities if they were re-developed. The RMYC General Committee, after consultation with other parties, approved the outline plans. This outline re-development plan was then submitted to Wirral Borough Council for inclusion in the Wirral Waterfront plan for the River Mersey coastline from Eastham Country Park to Rock Ferry. The plans which have now been widely publicised in the Press locally are intended to stimulate re-development of the Rock Ferry area in order to enhance facilities in the area for the community and at the same time to establish a sailing centre, based on a new Club House, capable of hostingNational and international sailing events.
The Liverpool Daily Post newspaper article may be viewed at:

and
The Wirral Globe article at:
http://www.wirralglobe.co.uk/news/4640358.Plans for 10m_redevelopment_of_Mersey_coastline_unveiled/
The overall plans are only at an embryonic stage but already the RMYC suggestions have received a generally positive reaction and looking to the future it is hoped that they will successfully progress over the next five years creating a greatly improved environment
in the area together with much improved sailing facilities for the people of Wirral.
King Harald of Norway accepts Honorary Life Membership
of
Royal Mersey Yacht Club
The Royal Mersey Yacht Club is delighted to announce that H.M. King Harald of Norway has
accepted an Honorary Life Membership of the Club. The Club offered this honour to His Majesty
in recognition of his most outstanding and valuable contribution to the sport of yachting.
The invitation to H.M. King Harald was the concluding item of business for the Commodore Dr.
Nicolas Jedynakiewicz at the end of his term of office. Upon taking the office as the new
Commodore of the Club, David Massey said “We are delighted that His Majesty has accepted
Honorary Life Membership of this historic Mersey club.”

H.M. King Harald of Norway
The Royal Mersey Yacht Club has enjoyed royal patronage since its foundation in 1844. The
present patron is His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh who visited the club in May 2008.
In March this year His Royal Highness received Dr. Jedynakiewicz at Buckingham Palace so that
he could introduce the new Commodore Mr. David Massey.
King Harald of Norway is a passionate yachtsman. In earlier years His Majesty represented
Norway sailing in the Norwegian Olympic team three times. In 2008 his yacht “Sira”, which
was built for his father King Olav V, celebrated first place in the 8 metre class in the World
Championship of traditional sailing. He is a President of Honour of the International Sailing
Federation.
His father King Olav V, a keen sailor, was in the winning crew of the 8 metre class Olympic
gold medal team sailing the yacht “Norna” in the Amsterdam
Olympics of 1928.
Disaster strikes Mersey Mylne - 'Merle'
Earlier this week it was discovered that 'Merle' had broken adrift from her moorings and, perhaps
fortuitously, then become entagled with the club tender 'Gwyllam' on her moorings further North.
However, in the process, 'Merle' has suffered a broken mast and some damage to the hull above
the waterline. The only positive news is that the hull is not letting in water, so hopefully when
she is lifted out she will prove to be only slightly damaged below the waterline.

'Merle' in 2008
Our commiserations to owner Max Cooke, and we trust that in due course 'Merle' will be returned to her former fine condition and be back on the Mersey along with the rest of the
fleet ready for the 75th Mersey Mylne anniversary next season.
RMYC Menai Strait Regattas
The first week of the Menai Strait Regatta fortnight has seen somewhat mixed sailing conditions for the four Mylnes - 'Mersey', 'Merrimac','Meridian' and 'Mercantile' - which have made the journey from the Mersey this year.
Reportedly torrid conditions prevailed on the Tuesday with boats retiring and much bailing taking place. Then on Wednesday a fine and fair day with southerly winds arrived for the Beaumaris to Caernarfon race. After a lot of beating to windward and a variety of positioning for the tidal currents it ended with a relatively close finish off the Royal Welsh Y. C. at Caernarfon after about four hours of good competitive sailing. Meridian led the four boats over the finishing line, all finishing within about two minutes of each other. The transit of the Menai Strait was delightful for its scenery, enhanced as always by the sight of so many yachts under sail tacking their way along its length.

The Commodore helms 'Merrimac', accompanied by a relaxed crew, in the Swellies
On Thursday the Royal Welsh Y. C. race was held off Caernarfon in brighter almost summery weather, which saw a shortened course as the fleet became almost becalmed half way around the course. The light zephrs of wind which eventually arrived and an ebb tide ensured that just about everyone managed to sail back to the finishing line. The Mylne's staying moored up as usual in Victoria Dock overnight.

A neat moor of Mylnes
Friday was the Caernarfon Sailing Club race, again off Caernarfon. With a worsening forecast doubt continued as to it starting, but fortunately the southerly winds reamained hovereing about 18 to 20 knots and racing went ahead. A short choppy sea ensured that everyone enjoyed a fair amount of spray, but it enabled the fleet to have a lively race. Afterwrads the fleet sailed off with a following wind down to Port Dinorwic (y Felinheli) with some boats going on to moorings whilst the Mylnes and one Fife sought the safer shelter of the historic and delightful surroundings of the enclosed dock. This facility, arranged by the harbourmaster, was greatly appreciated.

The Lock at Port Dinorwic
Due to the horrible forecast the Mylnes were scheduled to return to Beaumaris on the Sunday ready for the remaining week's races, including of course the RMYC Regatta on Thursday. Hopefully this second week will be blessed with some summer weather - whatever that is!

Off Beaumaris
RMYC 2009 Silver Salver Races
The 2009 Silver Salver Races were initially postponed due to unsuitable weather on the scheduled evening. The races were then held a week later, the Squibs on Thursday 30th July in beautiful sunny conditions with a brisk westerly wind and then the Mylnes and Etchells on the Friday in lively SSE wind conditions under a leaden sky which led to some lively racing.
The worthy winning boats were:
National Squibs - 'Lately'
Mersey Mylne - 'Meridian'
International Etchells - 'Invader'
Congratulations to their
respective crews.

ANNUAL RMYC ~ ROYAL ANGLESEY YACHT CLUB TEAM RACING 2009

The annual team
racing event with Royal Anglesey Yacht Club was held in fickle conditions on
Sunday 19th July.
Each team had 4
boats with a pilot on each. The RMYC team included experienced Menai hands
such as Ronnie Hampton, Sally Collings , Paul Flower and Roy Brennan with
the youth team led by Peter Smith, with Peter Ball, John Collingwood and myself.
Surely an unbeatable squad!
Conditions for the
first of the two races were wet and miserable but with a light and steady breeze
from the South West. Sally and Nigel were very fortunate to sail aboard Tac’s
newly rebuilt and splendid Peggy, recently returned from a Classic Yacht rally
in Brittany, however it is apparently not yet fully tuned for maximum boatspeed.
That was our excuse anyway!
We were soundly
beaten in the first race, however, the second race, sailed in even lighter and
wetter conditions, gave us the chance to retaliate. Ronnie sailed splendidly,
leading from virtually the start to the finish, however the rest of us could not
quite match his speed or boatspeed but we were beaten by only 2 points.
My earlier team
talk had obviously not hit quite the right note, however, we enjoyed excellent
hospitality from all at RAYC both in their cLubhouse followed by a splendid and
convivial lunch in the Bishopsgate House Hotel, much recommended. Special thanks
to Mike Butterfield and Nick Tebbutt.
2010 will mark the next opportunity for a return match, to be held on our home waters in the Mylnes. With the 75th Anniversary looming lets hope we can have a full turnout, and perhaps we can do better at 5-a side!
RMYC Captain - Nigel Anderton

The Mylne Classic Regatta was thoroughly enjoyed by all the owners, crews
and friends of the many Mylne yachts and support boats taking part in this inaugural
event. Set in the home waters of the Clyde and in glorious weather, yachts came
from near and far to celebrate the ongoing design heritage of two Alfred Mylne's and
their successors.
The Mylne yachts taking part were:- in class two, Trefoil, Maid of Lorn, Shona, and Isla
(Clyde); Merrimac (Birkenhead); Reiver, Glen Sheil, Glen Moyle and Glen Elg
(Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland). In class one; Glenafton (Clyde), Kelpie
(South Coast), and Eileen II (Norway). Full results of the racing will be posted shortly.
The event would not have been possible without the support of our sponsors
Silvers Marine,Southampton Yacht Services, Adelphi Distillery and Dubarry who showed
their faith in us,and shared our belief and passion in the Mylne name.
We must also thank all the Mylne owners who sent in their messages of support for the
Official Programme, as well as advertisers. We had excellent service from Rhu Marina
and Bute Berthing Company and they ensured every yacht was well looked after. Thanks
also to The Isle of Bute Sailing Club and the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club and
the race committee.
The Mylne Regatta organising team of Margaret, Katrina, Natalie, Natasha, Maureen,
Alastair, Kenneth and our camp entertainer Alex were crucial to the overwhelming
success of the event. Thank you to them from myself and everyone who took part and
made such unanimously positive comments about their enthusiasm and professionalism.
A special thank you to the daughter of Alfred Mylne II, Susan Mylne who joined with us
to celebrate the wonderful design legacy of her father and great Uncle, a legacy
continued by Ian Nicolson and since 2007 by myself and Ace Marine Ltd.
We will shortly be posting up the photographs of the event, and please sign up to our
newsletter service to keep abreast of developments as we continue to build on this first
successful event. It is the job now of A.Mylne and Co and every owner of a Mylne yacht
to promote the virtues and heritage that owning such a great mark bestows on the world
of yachting. Together it is time to tell the world that not only do we enjoy owning a
classic yacht, but that we enjoy owning a Mylne Classic Yacht!
Finally we have been asked when the next regatta will take place. We will be taking
soundings from those who took part, and looking at event diaries. Plus we will be asking
for feedback on this first event so we can make the next event even better. So watch this
space!

A SPECIAL MYLNE EVENT

On Saturday 27th June a special Mylne event was held at the Club organised by Ian Diamond, Mylne Secretary with special guest David gray, Director of Ace Marine who own Mylne and Co Ltd.
David joined the Commodore and Ian Diamond on Mersey Mylne 'Meridian' for what proved to be a very enjoyable sail on the River Mersey for him. David Gray very kindly provided prizes, and Mylne regalia was available for purchase after the dinner organised by Carys Jarvis.
It was greatly appreciated that David had joined us in advance of the Mylne Regatta on the Clyde being held from 12th July which the Commodore and Ian Diamond are attending.
It was a most enjoyable day for all who were able to be present.
RMYC Regatta June 13th 2009

A visiting Falcon awaits the start
After two disappointing years where the strong south-easterly winds prevented the Regatta from taking place Regatta day dawned this year sunny but with rather light winds. Happily by the time of the first race at 1400 the wind had inceased enough to enable some brisk sailing. A fine array of Club and visiting yachts partook of a really super day's racing and a good time was had by all.
Our thanks to the visitors for supporting the RMYC Regatta day we greatly enjoyed your company.
Following the Royal Mersey Mylne Cover picture on the Wirral Champion magazine and the later publication of our article about the Club, it is gratifying to see that in the Summer edition of the Wirral Champion Journal there is another Cover picture of on this occasion Mersey Mylnes 'Meridian' and 'Mercator' sailing in company on the River Mersey. The previously published article is also included in this summer edition of the Wirral Champion Journal. On sale in most Wirral newsagents.

'Northside
Dragon' starts the beat to windward Day 1
A very successful and extremely testing three days of the International
Etchells European Championship organised by RMYC and hosted by Holyhead Sailing
Club saw Irish registered Etchells 'Northside Dragon' helmed by Jay Burke the
worthy overall winner of the event.

Saturday was the most testing of the days with a very cold and strong southerly
wind gusting to 28 knots throughout the day. With two dis-mastings and a variety
of other mishaps the fleet was reduced from twenty-one to ten for the final of
the three races held that day. A special mention should be made of the
determined and stoic attitude of the RIB and mark laying boat crews who stuck at
it in very uncomfortable conditions on what turned out to be a very long and
arduous day, which left them extremely cold, wet and tired. A huge thank you to
them all for making racing possible despite pretty awful conditions.
Sunday saw a much better day with southerly wind of 15 to 20 knots but bright
sunshine to lift everybody's spirits. Nineteen boats reappeared and the two
races were keenly fought and much enjoyed by all the competitors.
A very enjoyable dinner was held at the Treaddur Bay Hotel on Saturday evening
and the RMYC Commodore thanked a very long list of all who had made the event
possible and as it was already proving after two days, so successful in its
organisation.
'Northside Dragon' leads the spinnaker run.
Monday turned out to be another fine day for sailing with winds still southerly,
but now in the ten to fifteen knots range with a more inshore course than on the
previous two days. As this was a period of big tides, around 9 metres, the tide
played a significant part in strategy on all three days. This led to different
tactics with some boats going inshore and some offshore so it made very
interesting viewing from the committee boat.
Special mention should be made of the leading RMYC Etchells, 'Invader' helmed by
rear-Commodore Trevor Tansey who finished a very creditable 12th overall, which
considering the handicap of anti-fouling necessary for RMYC boats on their
mooring in the Mersey is all the more creditable.
The
fleet beating to windward day 2 with Holyhead Mountain providing a fine
backcloth as seen from the Committee Boat.
The Race Officer was Mike Butterfield who worked extremely hard every day to
ensure that the racing not only complied with all the exacting Championship
requirements but properly tested the crews as is worthy of such an important
series. This was made possible by the very kind provision by her owner of the
splendid catamaran motor yacht 'Bacardee' as a Committee boat.
The warm and extremely friendly hospitality of the Holyhead Sailing Club was
greatly appreciated in particular by the RMYC, but also by everyone else
involved in what proved to be a most enjoyable and successful three days.
